Solar HVAC: What You Need to Know

Hi, my name is Suzanna. When the old HVAC system in my home began to fail, I decided to invest in a new one. Over the past few years, I have become increasingly environmentally aware, so I wanted my new HVAC system to be as green as possible. I contacted an HVAC contractor and discussed what I wanted, and they suggested I have a solar powered HVAC system installed in my home. I did a little more research and I was really impressed by the solar option as it would save me money and help to save the planet. I decided to start this blog to encourage others to explore solar HVAC systems.

Solar HVAC: What You Need to Know

Two situations in which you should choose ducted air conditioning

by Yolanda Mason

If you're unsure which type of air conditioning system you should choose, and are in one of these situations, you should consider choosing ducted air conditioning.

Your home has a minimalist look

If your home has a minimalist look, and you want to ensure that the air conditioning equipment doesn't interfere with its aesthetic, then ducted air conditioning would be an excellent choice.

The reason for this is that this type of air conditioning system is largely hidden from view; the HVAC contractor inserts the ducts into the cavities within the building's walls and the only components that are visible to the occupants of the building are its thermostat and its vents (which are usually flush with the walls and, therefore, not too noticeable). In contrast, a split system has interior units that need to be attached to the visible areas of a wall and so are very noticeable. Furthermore, the units themselves are relatively large and unlike the ducted system's vents, are not flush with the walls they're attached to. As a result of the units' visibility, they may not be suitable for your property in which you've created a minimalist look.

The air conditioning unit will be in use most of the time and you want the system to operate quietly

If your home is located somewhere hot and, because of this, the air conditioning system that the HVAC contractor installs will probably be in use most of the time, but you also need the system to operate quietly, then a ducted system could be the best choice. The reason for this is that ducted systems are generally quieter than other air conditioners when they're switched on and usually only produce a low sound that is only noticeable when there is no other ambient noise in the immediate environment. This is important in your situation, because, whilst you might be able to tolerate a noisy air conditioner if, for example, you were only going to use it for 20 minutes a day, its noisiness could become bothersome if you need to use it for hours every day.

It's important to note that whilst they are designed to be fairly quiet, ducted air conditioning systems can become a bit noisier when too much dirt builds up on their ducts or air filters. As such, if having a quiet air conditioner is important to you and you decide to buy a ducted system, you must prioritise having its filters and ducts cleaned.
